What does our Diploma do?

  • The progamme is designed to support those entering the sector and those with some experience to become fully fledged practitioners to improve conditions in the privately rented sector.
  • Students will gain and understanding of the sector, impacts of poor housing on health, together with law, governance, and building construction.

About your course

About your course

This module develops an appreciation of governance and the legal system, including legal doctrines applicable to criminal, evidence and civil law as well as an introduction to statutory nuisance and legislation covering environmental health housing interventions.

This module explores relationships between housing and health and how organisations can work more effectively to deliver better health outcomes. A range of social and geographical communities are considered to develop effective, integrated, evidence-based interventions. Skills for implementing housing and strategies and interventions at local level will be developed

This module explores principles, terminology and methods underlying construction; performance of residential buildings; coupled with practical skills to recognise building defects and ability to specify suitable diagnostic treatments. It explores relevant legislative remedies available to intervene on individual and strategic levels to deliver safer and healthier housing and local environments.

Placement learning links academic learning to a placement organisation enabling application and development of skills gained from University into the placement and future employment.

Leaners embed understanding of policy, practice, approaches and roles of agencies in involved in improving conditions and protection of those living within the private rented sector.

How is Diploma in Private Sector Housing Interventions taught?

The Diploma is taught online using timetabled sessions so that you learn together.  You are taught by practitioners who have experience in the field and using your own practice experience and that of other learners to develop a comprehensive understanding of practice.

Mature students will be interviewed by the programme leader to discuss suitability for study at level 4..

Other qualifications

Students who do not have the standard entry qualifications but who have relevant professional experience may apply to enter the programme using APEL (accreditation of prior experiential learning) – discuss your application with the programme leader.

Prospective students will normally be in a workplace that is involved in the improvement of private sector housing. This is necessary as part of the programme is dedicated towards application of theory in practice and is assessed by a practice portfolio.

The programme is open to students with disabilities. Students who have a disability are welcome to contact the programme leader prior to applications to discuss any specific needs.
