Research activities

I have extensive experience of conducting evaluations of mental health and social care interventions in a variety of settings. I have expertise in research that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the process and outcome of complex community interventions. I work collaboratively with investigators conducting randomised controlled trials, typically managing the ‘process evaluation’ component of the trial.

As principal or co-investigator I have been involved in the design, completion and reporting of a large number of multi-site projects, supervising research teams and collaborating with academic partners of international standing. These projects often involve service user involvement and co-production.

Primary research themes:

·         The community management of mental illness and substance misuse,

·         The organisation and management of mental health services

·         The implementation of interventions which have a research evidence-base.

Current Teaching

I supervise students undertaking dissertations on Social Work programmesand (Think Ahead, Social Work MA) and Work Based Learning (MSc Dual Diagnosis).

I supervise four PhD students.
