Research activities

Evolutionary genetics; Molecular ecology; Phylogenomics; Circatidal rhythms

My research aims to link biological diversity to changes in genomes. I use molecular approaches to gain understanding of the genetics underlying morphological divergence and phylogenomic methods to resolve animal relationships and diversity.

Current Teaching

Martijn is Programme Leader of BSc Biological Sciences. He teaches aspects of organismal biology, molecular biology, genetics and genomics on undergraduate and postgraduate modules.

He is module leader of: BIO1116 Practical Skills for Bioscientists, BIO1632 Form and Function I, BIO2556 Molecular Biology, BIO2566 Aspects of the Tree of Life, BIO3232 Bioinformatics, BIO3556 Gene expression and control, BIO4799 Research Project.

Biography

Martijn has a background in Evolutionary Genomics, Phylogenetics and Molecular Ecology. His aim is for his research to result in a better understanding of earth’s biological diversity.

He was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in 2021.

He is on the Editorial Board of Evolutionary Ecology (Springer-Nature) (since 2016) and The Evolutionary Journal of the Linnean Society (Oxford Academic) (since 2022).
